The Captivating Landscape of the James E. Grey Preserve

Nestled away from the hustle and bustle of New Port Richey, Fla., lies the James E. Grey Preserve – a captivating landscape of barbed palm trees, towering pines, imposing oaks, and Spanish moss draped from branches. This wild refuge is a haven for eagles, owls, manatees, and deer, and it buzzes with the activity of bees searching for nectar among the flowers. It is truly an idyllic setting that could easily be mistaken for Jurassic Park.

But, the preserve is also home to a red-bellied woodpecker, which was discovered during the National Audubon Society’s annual Christmas Bird Count. In total, 160 species of birds were spotted in the area, drawing avid birders from near and far! As kayakers sail along the picturesque Pithlachascotee River, they can keep an eye out for porpoises and alligators lurking beneath the surface.

The James E. Grey Preserve provides a unique and awe-inspiring opportunity to explore nature and experience the beauty of the Florida wilderness firsthand. It is no wonder that so many people flock here to bask in the wonders of this magnificent sanctuary.

After being purchased by the city in 1997, the preserve underwent a $630,000 makeover and was opened to the public in 2007. The renovations included picnic shelters, restrooms, a parking lot, and a boardwalk over the river that leads to a fishing pier—allowing visitors to launch kayaks and explore the area with ease. This beloved destination is also part of the Great Florida Birding & Wildlife Trail; thus, it is home to an abundance of feathered friends and other wildlife.

Mike Ranck, a board member of the West Pasco Audubon Society, proudly shares that visitors can spot a cool bird and then see three manatees come right under them. Pasco County typically ranks among the highest in the state for noted bird species, with more than 160 species being tallied in Pasco last year for the National Audubon Society’s annual Christmas Bird Count.

The region is a convergence area, representing the northern range for certain migrating sub-tropical birds and the southern range for certain northern birds. During late fall and winter, bird watchers at the park can admire a variety of species such as robins, red-bellied woodpeckers, eagles, thrashers, screech owls, egrets, or herons. Spring migration brings even more to the park, with a silk oak tree being a prominent spot for swallow-tailed kites in the spring and summer months.

The Leatherleaf Fern is a significant species of the park, with its fronds feeling as tough and thick as a boot. It’s no surprise that bird watchers are in awe of this unique plant. The park also has plenty of purple clamshell orchids that add to the serenity and beauty of the area. All these elements come together to make the park an incredible destination for nature lovers.

Ranck proudly adds, “The best time to visit is in the early morning when the birds and wildlife are most active. It’s convenient for a lot of people, yet many don’t know it’s here!”

Crystal River: An Unforgettable Experience

Visitors to the Crystal River are treated to an unforgettable experience with the annual migration of manatees seeking refuge from the cold waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
