Pasco County typically ranks among the highest in the state for noted bird species, with more than 160 species being tallied in Pasco last year for the National Audubon Society’s annual Christmas Bird Count.
The region is a convergence area, representing the northern range for certain migrating sub-tropical birds and the southern range for certain northern birds. During late fall and winter, bird watchers at the park can admire a variety of species such as robins, red-bellied woodpeckers, eagles, thrashers, screech owls, egrets, or herons. Spring migration brings even more to the park, with a silk oak tree being a prominent spot for swallow-tailed kites in the spring and summer months.
The Leatherleaf Fern is a significant species of the park, with its fronds feeling as tough and thick as a boot. It’s no surprise that bird watchers are in awe of this unique plant.
